Extended Closure Begins July 22
Thunder Bay – NEWS – There really are only two seasons in Thunder Bay, Construction season and snow clearing season as far as our roads are concerned.
Starting Tuesday, July 22, the intersection at Cumberland and Water Streets—including the Marina Overpass—will be closed to most vehicle traffic as crews move into the next phase of the new roundabout project. The full closure is expected to remain in place through October.
Detours and Access Details
-
Vehicle Detours: Clearly signed detours will redirect traffic around the work zone.
-
Emergency & Truck Access: Fire, EMS and policing vehicles, plus approved trucks, will still be able to pass through the site.
-
Waterfront Access: Motorists can reach the waterfront via Pearl Street.
-
Pedestrian Routes: Foot traffic is maintained via Camelot Street and the existing pedestrian overpass.
Why the Closure Matters
“This closure is a necessary step to complete the work,” says Brian Newman, Senior Project Engineer. “Once finished, the roundabout will significantly improve traffic flow and safety at one of our city’s busiest junctions.”
By reconfiguring Cumberland and Water into a single-lane circular intersection, the city aims to reduce collision points, ease congestion during peak periods, and create a more predictable driving environment for locals and visitors alike.
Building a More Connected City
Investments like the Marina Overpass roundabout are part of the City of Thunder Bay’s broader strategy to enhance connectivity and support future growth. Improved intersections help shorten commutes, bolster waterfront access for tourism, and provide safer, more efficient routes for trucks servicing the port and downtown businesses.
The public is encouraged to plan extra travel time, obey posted detours, and check the city’s construction updates page for the latest traffic advisories. Thank you for your patience as Thunder Bay builds a smoother, safer road network.
