Sault Ste. Marie – Wildfire Update – No new wildland fires were confirmed in the Northeast Region by the evening of July 17. At the time of this update there are 9 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region.

All are being observed.

  • New Fires: None confirmed on July 17 in the Northeast Fire Region.

  • Active Fires: 9 wildland fires remain active and are under observation.

  • Overall: Low fire hazard across most of the region.

  • Exceptions: Pockets of moderate hazard along the southern boundary and selected areas of the Far North.

Follow Outdoor Burning Regulations

Before burning yard waste or woody debris, consider alternatives like composting or using your local landfill. If you must burn on-site, comply with Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations:

  • Timing:

    • Ignite no earlier than two hours before sunset

    • Extinguish by two hours after sunrise

  • Safety Measures: Keep water and tools on hand to contain the fire.
