Suspect arrested after day-long standoff on Cumberland Street North, police presence remains active
THUNDER BAY – A tense standoff that gripped Thunder Bay’s north side for much of Friday has ended with the arrest of a suspect. Thunder Bay Police Service confirmed the individual was taken into custody around 10:30 p.m. on July 4.
The incident began shortly after 8:30 a.m. Friday, when officers responded to a report of a weapons-related situation in the 100 block of Cumberland Street North. Upon arrival, police quickly contained the area, and a standoff ensued.
Throughout the day, negotiators and tactical teams worked to resolve the situation peacefully. Authorities confirmed that an individual who had been held hostage by the suspect managed to exit the location safely during the incident.
Through the day with sun, rain, and long hours, the TBPS and the OPP officers maintained a very professional attitude.
Members of the Ontario Provincial Police provided assistance during the response.
While the suspect is now in custody, a visible police presence remains at the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
Residents are advised to avoid the area while officers complete their work.
