Winnipeg Man in Custody After Assaulting Transit Supervisors During Wellness Check

THUNDER BAY – NATIONAL CRIME REPORTS – A 23-year-old Winnipeg man is in custody following an assault on two Winnipeg Transit supervisors, who were checking on his well-being while he was sleeping on a city bus.

The incident took place at approximately 5:34 p.m. on June 14, in the area of Fort Street and Graham Avenue. Central District patrol officers responded to the scene, where they found the man actively struggling with the two supervisors. He was promptly taken into custody without further incident.

According to Winnipeg Police, the Transit Supervisors had boarded the bus to perform a wellness check after noticing the man was asleep. Upon being awakened, the man became agitated and physically assaulted both supervisors, who sustained minor injuries but did not require medical attention.

Under Section 80 of Manitoba’s Police Services Act, Winnipeg Transit Supervisors are designated special constables and possess the legal powers and protections of peace officers while on duty.

The suspect, identified as Diego PORTEOUS-JELDERS, has been charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
