Jessica Bader and her story exemplifies what it means to be at the forefront of educational change. Her journey, deeply rooted in academia, paints a picture of someone who’s not just working within the system but actively seeking to reshape it. With a career marked by ingenuity, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to excellence, Bader stands out as a true trailblazer in education. Her strategy goes beyond simply meeting objectives; it’s about setting new benchmarks, challenging traditional norms, and fostering environments where growth and learning flourish.

From the beginning, it’s clear that a passionate belief in the power of education drives Bader’s work. Through strategic leadership, a solid commitment to diversity and inclusivity, and a keen eye for the potential of new technologies, she has crafted educational experiences that are not only inclusive and engaging but also prepare students for the future.

The Foundations of Bader’s Professional Journey

Bader’s foray into education was profoundly shaped by two pivotal figures: her father, a devoted social studies teacher and principal in the South Bronx, and the principal who later became her mentor and champion. Her father’s unwavering dedication to his students and community, exemplified by his extraordinary gesture of providing a home for a student in need, instilled in Bader a deep-seated belief in the importance of education. This belief was further nurtured by the principal, who took Bader under his wing when he appointed her as his assistant principal, imparting her invaluable lessons on hard work, integrity, and the importance of empowering teachers.

Proof of the cyclical nature of mentorship in education came full circle when one of Bader’s former 7th-grade students, inspired by her passion and dedication, chose to pursue a career in English teaching and eventually joined Bader’s team nearly 20 years later. These experiences underscore educators’ significant influence in shaping the trajectories of their student’s lives and careers, highlighting the impact of mentorship and inspiration that Bader continues to build upon.

Making Waves in Education

Bader’s influence was transformative at the Oyster Bay–East Norwich Central School District. Under her guidance, the district celebrated unprecedented success, notably in English and history test scores, which soared from 89% to 95% and 25% to 65%, respectively.

Further, Bader helped introduce a program called “Train the Trainer,” which equipped educators with the tools to amplify their teaching efficacy. This initiative wasn’t just about imparting knowledge; it was about creating a sustainable professional development model that would ripple through the educational ecosystem, enhancing the quality of instruction across the board.

Bader points to developing and implementing the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) when asked about her most significant career accomplishment. This framework was crafted to systematically provide academic and behavioral support tailored to meet student’s needs. It’s particularly notable for its ability to pinpoint students who might be struggling—due to academic challenges, a lack of engagement, behavioral concerns, or a combination thereof—and provide them with the support they need to succeed.

At the heart of MTSS are the “Tier II” Interventions, which cater to groups of students needing extra help outside the regular classroom activities. This could range from social skills workshops and strategies for self-management to specialized academic support, ensuring that interventions are targeted and effective.

Bader’s role in conceptualizing and introducing the MTSS framework to 30 district leaders and principals was a turning point in her career. Her blueprint for intervention, marked by its clarity and focus on specific support mechanisms, gained traction and was embraced by more than 20 middle schools throughout New York City. The broad adoption of her framework speaks to its efficacy and power to reshape educational practices, providing a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for students with diverse needs.

Navigating Adversity And Balance

Bader’s professional story is as much about overcoming adversity as educational creativity. Her journey has been punctuated by significant personal and professional challenges she navigated with resilience and tenacity. A particularly poignant struggle was her journey to motherhood, marked by fertility challenges that tested her strength and resolve. Her story of undergoing fertility treatments, including three rounds of IVF, before welcoming her twins, Henry and Joseph, into the world shows her determination and capacity to face life’s hurdles head-on.

That philosophy is also why Bader starts daily at 5:15 am with a rigorous workout. For Bader, this routine is a foundational practice that she credits with helping her manage stress, maintain work-life balance, and bring her best self to the challenges of her professional life. For her, exercise is an essential component of her success formula, demonstrating how integrating wellness into daily life can empower one to navigate both personal and professional arenas with strength and determination.

Besides her work, Bader enjoys reading, puzzles, and sports, sharing these activities with her family. A quote from Nelson Mandela, “Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell and got back up again,” encapsulates her philosophy on resilience and perseverance. These qualities have defined both her personal and professional life.

Looking ahead, Bader is motivated by her family and the opportunity to inspire resilience and determination in others to face life’s challenges.
