SIOUX LOOKOUT – NEWS – A car drove into the Sacred Heart Church in Sioux Lookout earlier this afternoon.

The Sioux Lookout Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) report that on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at approximately 3:00 pm CDT, the Sioux Lookout OPP responded to a serious traffic incident in which a vehicle collided with a local church.

The police investigation has determined that the event was not targeted, and there were no hate-motivated factors associated with the occurrence. Although there were serious damages to the vehicle and building, nobody was injured.

This occurrence is the second incident this week where officers have investigated situations in which driver error has created an immediate threat to public safety.

Because of this, the OPP would like to remind all drivers that they have the responsibility to operate their vehicle safely every time they get behind the wheel.

Driving incidents could result in severe injury or death of you or a member of your community. Should you be involved in an incident where your driving abilities put others at risk, you may face criminal driving charges as well as having your driver’s license suspended pending a medical review.

Although individual instances of poor driving may be attributed to a momentary lapse in judgement, the accumulation of smaller factors may indicate that it is time for you to re-assess your ability to drive responsibly. Should you be doubting your driving ability at any time, please consider using alternate transportation and start a permanent transition away from driving before becoming involved in a major incident that has your driving privileges revoked.

It is the responsibility of every driver to ensure public safety on our roads, trails, and waterways. For additional resources to assist you with these considerations or having these discussions with family members, please refer to Ontario.ca, or https://tonsmb.org/mature-driver/
