THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel is announcing new leadership for its fifth year of operation. Longtime community leader and tournament supporter Ken Boshcoff will lead the event as Tournament Director beginning in 2018, spearheading this year’s goal to surpass one million dollars in charitable donations since inception.

Boshcoff has been involved with the event since 2014 as a dedicated volunteer. His resume highlights career positions that complement the interests of the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel, along with a wealth of expertise in community leadership, development, event management and a vast network of professional contacts that will ensure his success with the tournament.

“The Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel is an economic driver for Thunder Bay, Oliver Paipoonge, and region,” said Boshcoff. “Being able to continue on the success of the event and ensure its longevity supports the mandate of our board, the Staal Family and the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada. I look forward to working with all of the partners, supporters, volunteers and community members throughout the coming months as we prepare for an exciting 2018 event.”

The world-class golf event powered by hundreds of volunteers raised a record contribution of $271,500 for local charities this past year. Scott Smith, who has led the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel as the Executive Director since its inception, is proud to turn the event over to a new Tournament Director and the Board of Directors. Over the past year, Smith mentored and advised the organization to facilitate the change.

“The event would not be where it is today without Scott’s outstanding leadership and drive. He truly embodied the organization’s mission of promoting the community, growing the sport of golf in Thunder Bay, contributing awareness and funds to local charities, and creating a fun and rewarding environment for all involved,” said Boshcoff.

The Staal Foundation Open Board of Directors, who were officially announced back in January of 2017, will take on a larger responsibility this year. The dedicated community volunteers will help lead the planning and execution of the 2018 event. The 2018 Staal Foundation Open Board of Directors are as follows:

    • Brian Campbell
    • Sean Davies
    • Walter Flasza
    • Greg Jarvis
    • Johanna Maki
    • Gloria Sherban

Leading the Board of Directors will be Walter Flasza, a senior partner at BDO Canada. Flasza has been a part of the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel for the entirety of its four-year run as a volunteer in Communications and Marketing. He will now oversee the Staal Foundation Open as the Chair of the Board. His expertise in finance and accounting along with a passion for golf and community involvement, will propel the new Board and ensure the ongoing excellence and success of the event. “We have an amazing team, an amazing event, and an excellent history. Now we will continue to build and evolve the Staal Foundation Open,” Flasza commented.

The Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel will return to Thunder Bay, Ontario, scheduled at Whitewater Golf Club on July 9th to the 15th, 2018.
