Impaired Boating and Drivers Keep Police Busy

THUNDER BAY – CRIMEBEAT – On Saturday, August 12, 2017 at approximately 10:16pm, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Birch Beach Road in the Municipality of Shuniah.

The driver of an SUV collided with a hydro pole.  The driver and one passenger were transported to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

While speaking with the driver, officers determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol. The driver was arrested and a Breath Sample Demand was issued.

Russell PELTONEN, 33 years of age, from Toronto, On, was arrested and charged with:

-Operate a Motor Vehicle with Over 80 mgs of Alcohol contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code,

He is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on September 22, 2017 to answer to the charge.

There were three separate incidents of impaired driving on Sunday, August 13.

At approximately 4:17pm, an officer responded to a report of an erratic driver on Highway 102. The officer located the vehicle and while speaking with the driver, the officer determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol. The driver was arrested and transported to detachment for further tests.

Darin LACEY, 53 years of age, from Thunder Bay was arrested and charged with:

-Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code,

-Operate a Motor Vehicle with Over 80 mgs of Alcohol contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code,

He is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on October 24, 2017 to answer to the charges.

At approximately 6:15pm, officers were advised of an erratic driver on Highway 11/17 near the Balsam Street intersection. The vehicle was located on Strathcona Avenue and a traffic stop was conducted.

While speaking with the driver, the officer determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol. The driver was arrested and transported to detachment for further tests.

Duncan MACASKILL, 59 years of age, from the Municipality of Shuniah was arrested and charged with:

-Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code,

-Operate a Motor Vehicle with Over 80 mgs of Alcohol contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code,

He is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on October 13, 2017 to answer to the charges.

At 10:29pm, an off duty OPP officer came across two males on Lake Superior in a sailboat. Both males were reported to be intoxicated. One of the males fell over board and had to be rescued from Lake Superior.

Steve CURRIE, 59 years of age, from Thunder Bay was arrested and charged with:

-Operate a Vessel with Over 80 mgs of Alcohol contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

He is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on November 7, 2017 to answer to the charge.

Carter RULE, 49 years of age, from Thunder Bay was arrested and charged with:

-Operate a Vessel with Over 80 mgs of Alcohol contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

He is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on November 10, 2017 to answer to the charge.
