Storm System Heading to Ontario Will Impact Weather

THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – Updated – Dec 13 15:00EST – Weather Advisory for Thunder Bay have Ended….

Thunder Bay is receiving light drizzle across the region this morning. The forecast is calling for snow today. Environment Canada has updated their weather advisories for the region.

The weather system tracking to Ontario from the United States is starting to firm up its track.

Special Weather Statement for:

  • City of Thunder Bay
  • Superior West
  • Beardmore – Jellicoe – Macdiarmid
  • Geraldton – Manitouwadge – Hornepayne
  • Nipigon – Marathon – Superior North
  • Kapuskasing – Hearst
  • Timmins – Cochrane.

Special Weather Statement ended for:

  • White River – Dubreuilville.

There is potential for a significant freezing rain event. A large low from Texas is expected to track northeast towards Lake Superior over the next two day.Latest indications show that precipitation will arrive today in the form of snow, with many areas receiving 5 to 10 centimetres of snow. Ice pellets and freezing rain may move in from the south tonight and into Monday as the low gets closer.

However, once the snow turns over to ice pellets or freezing rain, it may last for a few hours before either ending or turning back to snow in the wake of the low. There is still uncertainty as to the exact track of the low, which would affect how much snow, ice pellets or freezing rain would fall at a particular locale.

Motorists should be prepared to adjust travel plans accordingly, as there is potential for untreated surfaces to become icy if the freezing rain develops.

Environment Canada is closely monitoring this situation. Freezing rain warnings may eventually be required as the event draws closer.
