THUNDER BAY – The Winter Storm Warning has been extended. More heavy snow and blowing snow is in the forecast. Across Thunder Bay, city crews are out clearing snow from major roadways and downtown sidewalks. Roads however are slippery and more snow is continuing to fall.

Environment Canada reports, “A large low pressure system originating from Texas is tracking towards Lake Superior this morning. Varying amounts of snow, mostly in the 5 to 10 cm range, have already fallen in most areas across over northwestern and North Central Ontario.

Reports of closures are coming in. Thunder Bay Christian School is closed today.

Roadways are being cleared. So are as of 06:00AM major roads are being cleared. There is no salt being put down yet, and many streets are very slippery. If you do not have to go out today, not travelling on the roads is a safer choice.

“Additional amounts of 5 to locally 10 cm are expected today bringing total amounts of 15 cm or more. In addition, wind gusts to 50 km/h will result in blowing snow.

“Travelling conditions will be rather hazardous with untreated surfaces snow covered and slippery. Visibilities will be reduced significantly in local blowing snow.

“The snow is forecast to begin to gradually taper off later today as the low pressure system pulls away into Quebec”.

Impact on Region

Schools are impacted across the region. School bus cancellations are in effect today for Red Rock, Nipigon, Dorion, Geraldton, Longlac, Nakina and Beardmore.

Terrace Bay-Schrieber school buses are cancelled.  School buses in Manitouwadge and Marathon are also not running.

Classes cancelled at Lake Superior High School and Nipigon-Red Rock High School.

More freezing rain this morning.

A large low pressure system originating from Texas is approaching Lake Superior this morning. The freezing rain remained patchy in the overnight hours but is about to become more organized. A few more millimetres of freezing rain is likely this morning before it changes to some snow or flurries by afternoon.

Travellers should exercise caution due to icy conditions on untreated roads.
