Thunder Bay Chill Clinch Heartland Division

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Chill clinched the 2010 Premier Development League (PDL) Heartland Division Friday night at Chapples Park, Thunder Bay, with a 2-1 win over the Rochester Thunder. The Chill, who claims their third Heartland Division title in four years, was led by a two-goal brace by striker Brandon Swartzendruber.

The crowd at Chapples Park saw early scoring, with Swartzendruber giving the Chill the lead in the 6th minute after running onto a Gustavo Oliviera through-ball. The Thunder equalized shortly after with a similar goal in the 12th minute, as Ben Sippola sent Juan Chang through on a break and Wang placed the ball into the back of the net. The winning goal came in the 28th minute, after a succession of corner kicks; Swartzendruber put home the winner, with Oliveira claiming the assist on the corner.

The Chill out shot the Thunder 26 -4, and also earned more corner kicks, with a 13-1 ratio. Three cautions were shown during the match, with the Chill’s Juluis Abegar, and the Thunder’s Travis Denhne and Francis Otira all receiving yellows.

The second game of the weekend series will take place tomorrow, July 24th, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) at Chapples Park.

“While we regret any inconvenience to the fans, we are working hard to get the word out of the changes in the schedule”, said TBIBA Executive Director Warren Philp.

“We are at the same time pleased that we will be able to welcome Team Venezuela to this exciting competition”, he added.
