Construction trailer fire near Lakehead transformer station extinguished in Shuniah

THUNDER BAY – NEWS – Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services contained a construction trailer fire near the Lakehead transformer station on Lakeshore Drive on Wednesday evening, with no injuries reported and no damage to nearby structures. The incident matters locally because it happened near key energy infrastructure and comes as fire officials urge residents across Northwestern Ontario to prepare for wildfire season.

Fire crews respond to evening call on Lakeshore Drive

Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services said crews were dispatched just after 6 p.m. on April 8 to a reported structure fire in the 500 block of Lakeshore Drive.

When firefighters arrived, they found a construction trailer burning outside the secure area of the transformer station. On-site workers had already begun trying to knock down the fire, using snow and heavy equipment available at the site.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control at about 6:50 p.m. with help from workers clearing snow that had been limiting access to the trailer. The fire was declared out at about 7 p.m.

No other structures were affected. No injuries were reported.

Ten firefighters responded

A total of 10 SFES firefighters responded to the call. All units were back in service shortly after 8:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

FireSmart message ahead of wildfire season

With wildfire season approaching, SFES is reminding residents to review FireSmart Canada guidance and reduce combustible materials around homes and outbuildings.

Maintaining a non-combustible zone around structures can help reduce the risk of wildfire damage and improve firefighters’ ability to protect property during an emergency.

Why it matters in Northwestern Ontario

While the fire was limited to a trailer and did not spread, the response highlights two ongoing concerns in the region: protecting critical infrastructure and improving preparedness ahead of the spring and summer fire season.
