THUNDER BAY – The Florida Panthers’ run as one of the NHL’s elite teams has come to a hard stop.
After winning back-to-back Stanley Cup championships and reaching the Stanley Cup Final in three straight seasons, the Panthers will not be part of the playoff picture this spring. Florida was officially eliminated from postseason contention after a crushing 9-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
It marks the first time since the 2018-19 season that the Panthers have missed the playoffs, and the collapse is as surprising as it is dramatic.
Florida’s season was battered by injuries from the start. After playing 68 playoff games over the past three years, the wear and tear appears to have finally caught up with the club. Captain Aleksander Barkov missed the entire season, while major pieces like Brad Marchand, Matthew Tkachuk, and Seth Jones also spent significant time out of the lineup.
Even the players who stayed on the ice struggled to find their usual form.
Veteran goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, once a backbone of Florida’s championship success, has endured the roughest season of his 16-year NHL career. He was pulled in Saturday’s loss after giving up six goals on 19 shots. Through 51 games, the 37-year-old has posted an .878 save percentage, ranking 51st among 58 qualified goaltenders.
Now the attention shifts from the standings to the draft board.
The Chicago Blackhawks hold Florida’s 2026 first-round draft pick, but there is a wrinkle. If that selection lands in the top 10, the Panthers can choose to keep it and instead send an unprotected 2027 first-round pick to Chicago.
For a team that looked built to extend its championship window, this season ends not with another playoff chase, but with questions about health, age, and whether the Panthers can quickly reload for next year.
