Highway 17 and Highway 622 closed in Northwestern Ontario as weather worsens
DRYDEN — Ontario Provincial Police in the North West Region are warning motorists to stay off the roads in parts of Northwestern Ontario as severe weather and deteriorating driving conditions force highway closures Saturday evening. The closures affect key routes used by travellers and commercial traffic moving through the Dryden and Shabaqua area, making the situation significant for regional transportation and public safety.
OPP reports two highway closures as of 6:10 p.m. EST
According to OPP, the following road closures were in effect as of 6:10 p.m. EST on April 4:
Highway 17 is closed from Dryden to Shabaqua.
Highway 622 is closed from Highway 11 to Highway 17.
Police are urging motorists in affected areas to obey all road closures and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
Drivers urged to check conditions before heading out
OPP is advising the public to monitor Ontario’s 511 road information service for updates on closures and reopening times. Motorists are also being told to check Environment Canada weather alerts for the latest conditions.
In Northwestern Ontario, sudden weather changes can quickly make highways dangerous, especially on long stretches where visibility drops and road surfaces deteriorate fast. Closures on Highway 17 and connecting routes can also affect supply traffic, local travel and access between communities.
Situation remains active
Because weather-driven closures can change quickly, drivers are being urged to delay trips where possible and wait for official word before attempting to travel through the affected area.
