Hudson Bolton storms back in Indianapolis with Round 1 win as PBR playoff picture tightens

Bolton Bursts Back Into the Spotlight With Round 1 Win in Indianapolis

Hudson Bolton came out of the gate like a cowboy with something to prove — and on Saturday night in Indianapolis, he proved plenty. Returning after a four-event layoff with injured ribs, the 20-year-old from Milan, Tenn., slapped down the first qualified ride of the night and made it count, winning Round 1 of the Ram Trucks PBR Indianapolis presented by Cooper Tires with 89.90 points.

For rodeo fans tracking the Unleash The Beast tour, it was the kind of start that lights up the arena and changes the feel of the whole night. Bolton now heads into Championship Sunday atop the leaderboard, while the Monster Energy Team Challenge playoff field is also locked in after a dramatic night of team action.

Bolton sets the pace from the first whistle

There was no easing into this one. Bolton climbed aboard Workin Man on the very first out of the night and delivered a big-time 89.90-point ride to grab the Round 1 win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

That score put the 2025 PBR Rookie of the Year right on top heading into the final day of competition at the 14th Unleash The Beast event of the 2026 season.
Brady Fielder of Clermont, Queensland, was right behind him with 89.30 points aboard Coach, good for second on the night and valuable points in the season standings as he held on to No. 9 overall.

Cort McFadden, ranked No. 8 in the world, finished third after an 88.95-point effort on Rockabilly.

Daylon Swearingen, the 2022 PBR world champion, kept his momentum rolling one week after his first win in four years. He covered Super Trooper for 88.70 points to finish fourth and also deliver a crucial result in team competition.
Marco Rizzo rounded out the top five with 87.30 points on Simon Says. The Georgia rider remains in front in the Rookie of the Year race, holding a narrow lead over Maverick Smith.

Daylon Swearingen — 88.70
Marco Rizzo — 87.30
Maverick Smith — 87.25

Julio Cesar Marques — 85.55
Keyshawn Whitehorse — 84.30

Team Challenge turns into playoff drama

Now, folks, this is where the team side of the card really started throwing sparks.
The Kansas City Outlaws punched their playoff ticket in style, beating the Arizona Ridge Riders 87.25-84.30 to lock up the No. 3 seed in the Monster Energy Team Challenge post-season.
The winning ride belonged to 2024 PBR world champion Cassio Dias, who covered One Chance for 87.25 points. Arizona had one last shot to steal it in the final frame, but Keyshawn Whitehorse’s 84.30-point ride on White Command came up just short.
In the other game, the Carolina Cowboys shut the door on the Nashville Stampede, winning 88.70-0. Swearingen’s ride on Super Trooper was the only score either team could manage, but it was enough to give Carolina its first win of the season in the preseason showcase.
That result had playoff consequences across the board. Nashville was eliminated, and the Florida Freedom grabbed the final semi-final berth. The four teams moving on are the Missouri Thunder, Austin Gamblers, Kansas City Outlaws and Florida Freedom.
The semi-finals begin March 27 in Albuquerque, where No. 1 Missouri meets No. 4 Florida. The other semi-final is set for April 17 in Billings, with No. 2 Austin facing No. 3 Kansas City.

Ransom bucks into the Bull of the Year lead

Before the dust settled, there was another headline-maker in the building — and this one had four legs and a mean streak.

Ransom bucked off UTB debut rider Jadon Hayes in 45.60 bull points, the fifth-highest bull score of the season. That performance pushed Ransom into the No. 1 spot in the YETI Bull of the Year standings.

It was a reminder that in PBR, the cowboys are only half the story. Some nights, the bulls walk away with just as much attention.

Standings picture tightens

While Bolton stole the spotlight in Indianapolis, the overall world standings remain crowded at the top.

John Crimber continues to lead the 2026 Unleash The Beast standings with 674 points, followed by Sage Steele Kimzey at 647. Leandro Zampollo sits third with 475.50, while

Paulo Eduardo Rossetto and Dalton Kasel round out the top five.
Bolton entered the weekend 37th in the standings with 105 points, so his strong return could provide a timely push if he keeps rolling on Championship Sunday.

Rizzo, meanwhile, remains in a tight Rookie of the Year battle. He came into the event with 338 points, just ahead of Maverick Smith at 330, making every ride and every point matter down the stretch.

What comes next

Championship Sunday for Ram Trucks PBR Indianapolis presented by Cooper Tires begins at 2 p.m. ET.

With Bolton back healthy enough to win a round, Swearingen showing he has found fresh form, and the Team Challenge playoff bracket now set, the stage is built for a loud finish in Indianapolis.

For rodeo fans, that is the recipe for a good Sunday afternoon — rank bulls, hot riders and no room left for mistakes.
