Shipley Street fire in Thunder Bay sends 33 firefighters to battle basement blaze
Thunder Bay – NEWS – A smoke alarm helped alert a resident to a house fire on Shipley Street on Thursday morning, allowing them to get out safely before Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews arrived. The fire drew a large emergency response and serves as another reminder of the importance of working smoke alarms in homes across Thunder Bay.
Basement fire brought under control by multiple crews
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to the residential fire at 10:32 a.m. on March 19, 2026.
The first crew on scene was met by a resident who had already evacuated after being alerted by a smoke alarm. The resident told firefighters no one else was inside the home and said they believed the fire was in the basement utility room.
A second alarm was called as crews began their response.
Firefighters launched an interior attack and encountered heavy smoke and high heat while advancing into the basement. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said multiple crews were needed to bring the fire under control.
Large emergency response on scene
The incident brought several agencies to the scene, including Thunder Bay Police Service, Superior North EMS, Synergy North and Enbridge.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue deployed seven pumpers, one aerial device and one command vehicle. A total of 33 personnel responded.
Investigation continues
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported in the information released by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.
