FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION — Fort William First Nation (FWFN) has issued a Community Safety Notice warning residents to be vigilant after reports of a social media trend—often referred to online as the “Lug Nut Challenge”—circulating on TikTok and other platforms.
FWFN says the trend involves tampering with vehicle wheels, creating a serious risk for drivers and passengers.
While the notice is directed to community members, the warning is relevant well beyond the First Nation, with concerns the behaviour could also be attempted in Thunder Bay, Dryden, Fort Frances, Kenora, Sioux Lookout, and other Northwestern Ontario communities.
FWFN is urging residents to take basic precautions and to speak with young people about the real-world consequences of damaging or interfering with vehicles.
What community members are being asked to do
-
Check your vehicle’s wheels to ensure nothing appears disturbed or out of place.
-
If you notice anything concerning—such as loose or missing lug nuts—do not drive the vehicle.
-
Have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.
-
Talk with youth about the dangers and the serious legal consequences of vehicle tampering.
FWFN emphasizes that community safety is a shared responsibility and encourages residents to help spread awareness—without amplifying harmful online content.
Reporting concerns
If you see suspicious activity around parked vehicles or believe a vehicle has been tampered with, FWFN is asking residents to report it immediately to the appropriate authorities, local police services, community safety officers, or emergency lines when warranted.
Conclusion
FWFN warns of viral “lug nut” prank; residents urged to check vehicles and report tampering.
