Andy Jason Saindon remains on bail as sentencing postponed to June 2026 in years-long court proceedings

THUNDER BAY – COURTS Update – A former Thunder Bay Correctional Officer who has been convicted in connection with a major contraband investigation will remain free on bail until June 2026, following a court appearance on Monday.

Andy Jason Saindon, 43, appeared in person before Superior Court Justice Danial Newton on January 7, 2026, for what was expected to be a sentencing hearing.

Instead, Defence Attorney Gilbert Labine requested an adjournment, citing personal circumstances including a recent house fire, and his upcoming vacation to Arizona.

Federal Crown Attorney Craig Power objected to the length of the requested delay, emphasizing that the case has been ongoing for nearly five years.

Power argued that modern technology would allow Saindon’s defence attorney to participate remotely.

Despite the Crown’s opposition, Justice Newton agreed to postpone sentencing but firmly stated there would be “no further delays.”

Justice Newton has ordered that Saindon is to return to court for sentencing on June 23, 2026, at 3:00 p.m., and confirmed that the sentence will begin immediately following that appearance.

The court heard that a joint submission is being proposed, calling for a sentence of two years less a day in custody, followed by three years of probation.

Saindon walked out of court following the hearing. He continues to remain free on bail.

According to social media, he has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support recovery efforts from his house fire and has raised $250 to date.

Background on Case

Saindon was arrested on June 24, 2020, after an investigation by the Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) Intelligence Unit, which began in April of that year. The investigation focused on allegations that a Correctional Officer at the Thunder Bay Jail was smuggling contraband into the facility in exchange for profit.

Upon executing a search, TBPS officers seized quantities of MDMA (Ecstasy), cocaine, tobacco, cannabis, drug trafficking paraphernalia, and over $20,000 in cash.

Following his arrest, Saindon was terminated from his position at the Thunder Bay Jail.
