Shelter-in-Place Order Remains; Schools in Longlac and Long Lake #58 Closed as Search Continues

GINOOGAMING FIRST NATION – REGIONAL CRIME UPDATE – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Greenstone Detachment, in collaboration with the Anishinabek Police Service, continues the active search for two armed and dangerous individuals in the Ginoogaming First Nation area.

As of Wednesday morning, the shelter-in-place advisory remains in effect, and multiple schools in Longlac and Long Lake #58 First Nation have been closed for the day as a safety precaution.

Suspect Descriptions

Police have confirmed the suspects are:

  • Two Black males

  • One is wearing a grey jogging suit and has braided hair

  • The other is wearing black pants and black shoes

Highway 11 and Travel Advisory

Motorists on Highway 11, especially near Longlac and Ginoogaming First Nation, are urged to:

  • Remain alert

  • Avoid unnecessary stops

  • Do not pick up hitchhikers

  • Report any suspicious sightings immediately to 911

Members of the public who are not currently in the area are strongly advised to avoid travelling into the region until further notice.

SCHOOL CLOSURES – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9

Out of an abundance of caution, the following schools are closed today:

  • Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School

  • Marjorie Mills Public School

  • École Notre-Dame-de-Fatima

  • École secondaire Château-Jeunesse

  • Migizi Wazisin Elementary School

  • Migizi Miigwanan Secondary School

  • Confederation College – Longlac Campus

This decision was made to prioritize the safety of students, staff, and the broader community, as police operations remain active in the area.

Police Response and Public Support

The OPP acknowledges the anxiety and disruption caused by this ongoing situation. Officers remain on the ground, conducting targeted searches and working to resolve the incident as safely and swiftly as possible.

“We understand the concern this is causing the community,” the OPP stated. “We are taking every precaution necessary to ensure public safety.”
