THUNDER BAY – POLITICS – Ontario Progressive Conservative MPP Chris Scott (Sault Ste. Marie) has been removed from the PC caucus after being arrested on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
The Toronto Police Service made the arrest following an investigation by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS), according to statements shared with media on Monday. Premier Doug Ford’s office confirmed that Scott “is no longer a member of the PC caucus.”
SSMPS said no additional details about the incident or charges would be released to protect the privacy of the victim(s).
Premier Doug Ford states he won’t comment on the arrest as he does not want to interfere in a police matter.
What changes now at Queen’s Park?
Scott’s expulsion means he will not sit with the government caucus. Unless he resigns his seat, he would continue as an Independent MPP for Sault Ste. Marie. Scott was first elected in February 2025 in a narrow win defeating his NDP opponent by 114 votes.
Why this matters for Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario
Northern Ontario relies on regional alignment to advance files like highway safety, health-care recruitment, housing, and post-secondary funding. The removal of a Northern government MPP from caucus could dilute northern leverage inside cabinet and government caucus rooms. For Thunder Bay—home to key infrastructure, health, and education hubs—this shift may slow momentum on cross-riding priorities (e.g., Highway 11/17 improvements, Northern health staffing, and economic diversification) that often require coordinated advocacy from multiple Northern MPPs.
