Winnipeg – September 7, 2025 – A 21-year-old woman is facing criminal charges after allegedly assaulting a police officer during a disturbance at a Windsor Park establishment in the early hours of Sunday morning.

At approximately 3:15 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officers responded to a call regarding an intoxicated individual. The adult woman was detained under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act (IPDA)—a provincial statute allowing police to temporarily detain individuals deemed a danger to themselves or others due to intoxication.

While officers attempted to handcuff her, she resisted by pulling her arms away. Once placed in the backseat of a police cruiser, the situation escalated. The woman began aggressively kicking the safety divider separating the front and back seats.

As officers attempted to restrain her legs for safety, she reportedly kicked one officer in the chest and face, causing facial injuries. She was then arrested and now faces the following criminal charges:

1. Assaulting a Peace Officer

This charge under Section 270 of the Criminal Code involves using force against an officer engaged in their duties. A conviction can result in:

  • Maximum penalty: 5 years imprisonment (indictable)

  • Summary conviction: Up to 2 years less a day and/or a fine

2. Resisting a Peace Officer

This charge under Section 129(a) of the Criminal Code involves resisting or obstructing a peace officer in the lawful execution of their duties.

  • Maximum penalty: 2 years imprisonment (on indictment) or up to 6 months (summary conviction)

The woman was released from custody on an Appearance Notice, meaning she will be required to attend court at a later date.
