Thunder Bay — Two people are dead, including the suspected attacker, and six others are being treated for injuries after a stabbing incident Thursday morning in Hollow Water First Nation, about 200 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba RCMP said.
Patients transported to HSC Winnipeg; Code Orange lifted
Multiple patients with varying injuries were transported by air and by ground to Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Winnipeg. A hospital “Code Orange” — an alert used to prepare for a mass-casualty influx — was declared and lifted later in the morning, according to Shared Health. (In Winnipeg’s health system, Code Orange denotes an external disaster/mass-casualty event.)
Investigation underway
RCMP say the investigation is ongoing and plan to provide an update later Thursday. No additional details about the suspect or victims have been released.
Why this matters to Northwestern Ontario
Remote and rural First Nations across the Prairies and Northwestern Ontario face similar challenges in emergency response and inter-facility transport. Manitoba relied on STARS air ambulance for rapid transfers in this incident, while Ontario communities — including Thunder Bay — depend on Ornge, which maintains air and land ambulance assets at its Thunder Bay base.
Events like this underscore the importance of coordinated medevac capacity and mass-casualty readiness across the region.
