FORT HOPE FIRST NATION, ON – Police are appealing to the public for help after an early morning assault in Fort Hope First Nation (Eabametoong) left one man seriously injured.

Victim Sustains Serious Injuries, Transported to Thunder Bay

Shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 31, officers from the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) Fort Hope detachment responded to a report of an assault near the community’s baseball field.

The victim, an adult male, suffered injuries consistent with a stabbing. He was initially treated at the local nursing station before being transferred to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further evaluation.

His injuries are believed to be serious.

Assault Took Place Near Baseball Field Trail in the Community

Investigators say the incident occurred around 3 a.m. near a trail adjacent to the third-base line of the community’s baseball field.

According to police, the suspect approached the victim, chased him, and then carried out the assault using an unknown object. The victim was able to flee the scene and get to the nursing station, while the suspect escaped on foot in an unknown direction.

Suspect Described as Adult Male in Black Clothing, Ski Mask

The suspect is described as an adult male wearing all black clothing and a ski mask. Police have not yet confirmed the weapon used, and the motive for the attack remains under investigation.

The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service continues to investigate and is calling on community members or anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. Any information, no matter how minor it may seem, could assist in identifying the suspect and ensuring the safety of the Fort Hope community.
