Sudbury Wildfire Quickly Contained

Sudbury – Wildfire Update – As of the evening of August 23, 2025, one new wildfire—Sudbury 40 (SUD040)—was confirmed in Ontario’s Northeast Region. The fire, located about 5 km southeast of Pointe au Baril Station, was a small blaze covering just 0.1 hectares and has since been declared out.

Three Fires Still Active, Being Observed

There are currently three active wildfires in the region, all of which are under observation and not threatening communities at this time.

Fire Hazard Levels Vary

While fire hazard conditions remain low across most of the Northeast Region, areas stretching from North Bay to the southern boundary of the region are experiencing moderate to extreme fire hazard levels. Residents in these areas should stay alert and informed.

With many homes and cottages located in or near forested areas, Thunder Bay and other Northwestern Ontario communities should take proactive steps to protect their properties. The FireSmart program provides useful, practical guidance to reduce wildfire risks at the home and community level.

Outdoor Burning: Follow the Rules

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents to be cautious with outdoor burning. Use alternatives like composting or local landfill sites for disposing of yard waste. If you must burn:

  • Only ignite fires no sooner than two hours before sunset

  • Extinguish fires no later than two hours after sunrise

  • Always have tools and water nearby

  • Follow the full set of Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations

  • North of the French and Mattawa Rivers: Call 310-FIRE

  • South of the French or Mattawa Rivers: Call 9-1-1
