Wildland Forest Wildfire Update

One new fire near Union Lake; 33 active across the region as hazard remains mostly low

THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE UPDATE – Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) reports one new wildland fire in the Northwest Region by early evening on Aug. 19.

New fire of note

  • Thunder Bay 27 (THU027): Located on the northeast side of Union Lake, approximately 17.7 km north of Highway 11. Size 0.1 hectares. Status: Being Held.

Current fire activity

  • Active fires: 33

    • Not under control: 2

    • Being held: 1

    • Under control: 5

    • Being observed: 25

Fire hazard

The wildland fire hazard is mainly low across the Northwest Region. Moderate hazard persists:

  • Along the Canada–U.S. border from Rainy River to Quetico Provincial Park, extending north to Highway 599.

  • Across the Far North in the Nipigon fire management area.

No Drone Zone

Flying drones near forest fires is illegal and dangerous. Unmanned aircraft can ground waterbombers and helicopters, putting firefighters and pilots at risk. Stay clear of active fire zones.

  • North of the French and Mattawa rivers: Call 310-FIRE (3473)

  • South of the French or Mattawa rivers: Call 9-1-1
