32 active fires in the region; hazard low to moderate after widespread rainfall

THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE UPDATE – As of 5:34 p.m. CDT on August 18, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) reports no new wildland fires confirmed in the Northwest Fire Region.

Currently, there are 32 active wildland fires across the Northwest Region:

  • 2 not under control

  • 5 under control

  • 25 being observed

Over the past 24 hours, 14 fires were called out.


Fire Hazard Levels

Following recent widespread rainfall, the wildland fire hazard across the Northwest is now mostly low to moderate:

  • Low hazard: Western half of the region

  • Moderate hazard: Eastern half of the region

  • High hazard pockets: Scattered areas in the Thunder Bay and Nipigon fire management zones

Residents can monitor conditions through the province’s Interactive Fire Map.


Safety Reminder – “No Drone Zone”

AFFES reminds the public that flying drones near active forest fires is illegal and dangerous. Unauthorized drones can put the lives of firefighters, pilots, and emergency crews at risk. Stay clear of fire zones.


Reporting Wildfires

  • To report a wildland fire north of the French and Mattawa rivers, call 310-FIRE (3473).

  • To report a wildland fire south of those rivers, call 9-1-1.
