Wildfire Report – Northwest Fire Region

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services – August 16, 2025 – 17:11 CDT

THUNDER BAY – Wildfire Update – No new wildfires were confirmed in the Northwest Region as of the early evening on August 16, though several initial reports remain under investigation.

At present, there are 46 active fires across the region:

  • 3 not under control

  • 5 under control

  • 38 being observed

Additionally, six monitored fires in the Sioux Lookout sector were declared out today.

Fire Hazard Conditions

  • High hazard – Kenora fire management area and western Fort Frances sector

  • Moderate to high hazard – Dryden and Thunder Bay sectors

  • Low hazard – Most of Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, and Nipigon sectors

Fire of Note – Red Lake 99

  • Location: Northeast of Poplar Hill First Nation

  • Size: 30,602 hectares

  • Status: Not under control

  • Current conditions: Low fire behaviour is aiding firefighting efforts, with three crews making progress on suppression priorities.

Public Safety Reminder – No Drone Zone

Flying drones near active wildfires is dangerous and illegal. Drones can interfere with waterbombers and helicopters, putting pilots, firefighters, and community safety at risk. Stay clear of fire zones.
