RCMP launches drone corridor in Prairies to boost border security, target smuggling and illegal crossings

THUNDER BAY – NATIONAL SECURITY – The RCMP’s Federal Policing Northwest Region (NWR) is enhancing Canada–U.S. border security with the launch of a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) corridor—a drone patrol route designed to strengthen surveillance and coordination along the international boundary.
The trial program is being rolled out in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, in partnership with Transport Canada. The corridor will allow RCMP to conduct intelligence-led patrols to detect illegal border crossings, disrupt human smuggling operations, and intercept contraband such as illicit drugs moving in or out of Canada.
Stronger Border Surveillance
“The RCMP is committed to advancing the use of RPAS technology to enhance our service delivery models that protect the security of our Border,” said Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland, Regional Commander, RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region. “The creation of the RCMP RPAS corridor will also augment our ability to enhance coordination efficiencies amongst our law enforcement partners, which will ultimately have a direct impact on public safety.”
The new RPAS corridor will be in effect starting 9:00 p.m. tonight. It will be continually evaluated for operational value, cost-effectiveness, and community impact, with the potential to expand to other regions of the border.
About the Corridor

Technical name: Advisory Airspace (CYA)

Extent: Ground level to 500 feet, and 1 nautical mile (1.85 km) north of the border

Impact on aviation: Does not restrict flights, but pilots are urged to exercise caution and notify RCMP before flying in the area
Local pilots, agricultural operators, and recreational flyers can continue to operate in the area, but coordination with RCMP is encouraged to avoid mid-air conflicts and support safer drone operations.
