THUNDER BAY – NEWS – A 32-year-old man is once again facing impaired driving charges after a dramatic single-vehicle crash Sunday evening in the city’s south end — marking the second arrest in under three weeks for the same offence.

Thunder Bay Police Service Primary Response Officers were called to the intersection of Crawford Avenue and Gore Street shortly after 8:00 p.m. on August 3, following several 911 calls reporting a violent collision near the railway tracks.

Suspect Attempted to Beat Train, Vehicle Went Airborne

According to witness statements, the vehicle was seen travelling at a high rate of speed as it approached the railway crossing — despite a train visibly advancing toward the intersection.

Investigators believe the driver was attempting to beat the train when the car became airborne, lost control, and slammed into a utility pole.

The force of the impact caused significant damage to the vehicle and injured its occupants. Three passengers were inside, one of whom sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.

Driver Fled Scene, Arrested After Foot Chase

After the crash, the driver attempted to flee the scene on foot, but officers quickly pursued and apprehended him after a short chase.

Once in custody, officers noted clear signs of impairment, including open containers of alcohol and paraphernalia associated with drug use inside the vehicle. The licence plate on the vehicle was later confirmed to be stolen.

Repeat Impaired Driving Arrest

Police have confirmed that the driver was previously arrested for impaired driving less than three weeks ago, raising concerns about repeated risky behaviour behind the wheel.

Charges are pending as the investigation continues. Police have not released the suspect’s name at this time.

Public Safety Reminder

Thunder Bay Police are once again urging residents to never operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs, and to report suspected impaired drivers to authorities immediately.
