No Injuries Reported After Propane Explosions Near Simpson Street
THUNDER BAY – LOCAL NEWS – July 25, 2025 – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded swiftly to a potentially devastating blaze late Thursday night at a homeless encampment near Simpson Street. The fire was reported shortly before midnight, with multiple callers alerting emergency services to flames and exploding propane cylinders in the area.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered tents fully engulfed in flames, with volatile propane tanks posing an additional hazard. Crews acted quickly to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent tents and nearby structures.
Despite the intense heat and danger, no injuries were reported. Firefighters worked with urgency and compassion to protect vulnerable individuals sheltering nearby.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though authorities note the risks associated with open flames and the use of propane appliances in unsanctioned settings.
Fire Safety Reminder from TBFR
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is urging residents and especially those in informal housing arrangements to use caution when handling propane or flame-based heating and cooking devices.
“These fires are unpredictable and can escalate quickly,” said a TBFR spokesperson. “We encourage the community to follow safety recommendations and reach out for resources whenever possible.”
As the city continues to grapple with housing insecurity and street-level poverty, officials say ensuring the safety of encampment residents is a growing public concern—especially during hot summer months when fire risk is elevated.
Last fall and winter there were fires caused by propane barbecues and heaters being used in tents.
