THUNDER BAY – News — A 34-year-old Thunder Bay man is now facing a second-degree murder charge following a fatal altercation that occurred earlier this month in the city’s north side.
The Thunder Bay Police Service reports that Primary Response officers were dispatched shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, to the area of Jean Street and Van Norman Street, following reports of an assault.
Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from life-threatening injuries. The victim was immediately transported to hospital, where he remained in critical condition until Wednesday, July 16, when he was pronounced deceased.
The victim has since been identified as a 27-year-old resident of Thunder Bay. His name has not been released out of respect for the family.
This is the third homicide in the city in 2025.
Suspect’s Charges Upgraded After Victim’s Death
The accused, Billy MOSKOTAYWENENE, 34, was originally arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault in connection to the incident.
However, following the victim’s death and a subsequent investigation by the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit, MOSKOTAYWENENE was re-arrested on Monday, July 21, and charged with:

The accused has since appeared in court and has been remanded into custody pending a future court appearance.
