New Five-Year Growth Roadmap For Northern Ontario

Thunder Bay, ON – Politics 2.0 Coverage — Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor, and Thunder Bay Superior North MP has launched an updated Prosperity & Growth Strategy for Northern Ontario (PGSNO).

The new plan was drafted drawing on extensive consultations with municipalities, Indigenous organizations, local businesses and community groups, the strategy sets clear priorities—clean technology, value-added forestry, digital connectivity and cultural tourism—to guide federal investments and partnerships over the next five years.

“The economic landscape has seen many changes over the last five years and communities in Northern Ontario deserve new opportunities for economic development. Whether it is harnessing new investment opportunities or supporting careers in the tourism industry, today’s announcement is critical to maximizing Northern Ontario’s full potential, in collaboration with communities and organizations across the region.”
Minister Patty Hajdu

Shaped by Community and Indigenous Consultation

The updated PGSNO integrates feedback gathered through regional roundtables and online surveys held from Sault Ste. Marie to Timmins.

It responds to locally identified needs such as addressing labour shortages in resource-based sectors, enhancing transportation links to remote communities and supporting Indigenous-led economic initiatives. By aligning federal programs with regional opportunities, the strategy aims to foster self-reliant communities and attract new investment to Northern Ontario.

$4.57 Million for Tourism Infrastructure and Experiences

Complementing the strategy, FedNor is investing $4,571,673 in 22 tourism projects across the region. These investments will:

  • Expand and upgrade campgrounds and trails along Lake Superior’s north shore

  • Install interpretive heritage and wayfinding signage in historic towns

  • Develop Indigenous-led cultural tours and culinary trails

  • Build festival and exhibit facilities in Marathon, North Bay and other hubs

“Whether it’s domestic travellers or international tourists, we want more people to experience the beauty, culture and opportunities in every corner of this region. From coast to coast to coast, the Tourism Growth Program helps ensure that no part of Canada is left behind.”
Minister Rechie Valdez, Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism)

Rebecca Mackenzie of the Culinary Tourism Alliance added:

“Thanks to FedNor’s support, we will continue to build partnerships and foster diverse, inclusive culinary and agri-tourism destinations that honour local cultures.”

Investing through NODP and Tourism Growth Program

FedNor’s contribution comes via two streams:

  1. Northern Ontario Development Program (NODP)
Funds community-led projects—infrastructure, diversification and job creation—driven by municipalities, First Nations and not-for-profits.

  2. Tourism Growth Program (TGP)
Part of a $108 million federal commitment over three years, TGP supports SMEs, community groups and Indigenous businesses in developing new tourism products and experiences.

By targeting both foundational economic drivers and visitor-economy enhancements, Ottawa aims to unlock long-term prosperity across Northern Ontario’s vast and varied landscapes.
