Thunder Bay – Local News Update – On December 30, 2023, a 21-year-old woman passed away inside a residence in Thunder Bay. Police had been called earlier that evening to the home following a disturbance between the woman and a man.
Upon her death, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and launched an independent probe into the actions of Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) officers who attended the scene.
After a comprehensive review of witness statements, video evidence and officer interviews, SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded there were no reasonable grounds to believe any officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the woman’s death.
The SIU has therefore closed its file with no further action.
With the criminal investigation concluded, the TBPS will now initiate an administrative review under Section 81 of the Community Safety and Policing Act.
This internal process will examine officer conduct, policies and procedures related to the incident. The findings will be reported to the Thunder Bay Police Service Board once the review is complete.
