The current fire hazard in the Northeast ranges from low to moderate, with pockets of high risk particularly in the southern and central parts of the region. Residents and travellers are encouraged to check the Interactive Fire Hazard Map for up-to-date local conditions.
Drones Are Illegal Near Wildfires
A strong reminder for Thunder Bay and Northern Ontario residents: flying drones near wildfires is illegal and dangerous. These unmanned aircraft pose serious risks to frontline crews, including pilots and firefighters. Interfering with aerial firefighting operations can endanger lives and delay suppression efforts.
Outdoor Burning Regulations Still in Force
With warmer weather continuing, the public is asked to use caution when disposing of yard waste or debris. Composting or municipal landfills are the safest alternatives.
If burning is necessary, it must follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations, including:
-
Fires may only be lit two hours before sunset and must be fully extinguished within two hours after sunrise
-
You must have adequate water and tools to manage the fire safely
For full guidelines, consult the Outdoor Burning Regulations.
