THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Police, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and Emergency first responders are on scene at the McIntyre River this afternoon after reports that a man fell through the ice on the river.

Thin ice on area streams, rivers and lakes are always a concern at this time of the year.

On the weekend police and fire teams were practicing rescues on the ice.

The TBPS and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue coordinated efforts this weekend to work on video footage about unsafe ice. During this exercise we were joined by a number of citizens who were out enjoying the beautiful weather. It is this time of year everyone needs to be very cautious about heading out onto the ice. In many places the ice may look thick and safe but it only takes a fraction of a second to be totally submerged in the freezing water.
