THUNDER BAY – HEALTH – Wow! What a whirlwind it has been that has brought me to this seat today! I am honoured and excited to be the new Chair of the Health Sciences Foundation Board of Directors.  Over the next year I am looking forward to leading an amazing group of volunteer Board Members as we continue our endeavour of improving health care in Northwestern Ontario.

The Health Sciences Foundation and the Health Sciences Centre are ever evolving.  As a member of the Board of Directors since integration in 2008, I can fondly look back on where we were, what we have become and our vision for the future.  Over the past eight years, we have worked diligently and tirelessly to raise funds for vital medical equipment for the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Some of my highlights during this time have been raising funds for the Linda Buchan Centre through the Bearskin Airlines Hope Classic and, specifically, my work with the Exceptional Cancer Care Campaign that recently raised over $7 million dollars for our Cancer Centre.

As I take over the reigns as the Chair, I am reflecting on some of the other roles I have had with the Health Sciences Foundation.  I have been the Chair of the Development Committee, which is a committee that works closely with staff to ensure we are creating new initiatives and working towards our operational goals.  This committee has been a real delight to be a part of and a wonderful experience to work so closely with such passionate staff.

I have also been able to sit on our Grants Committee that works to allocate donor funds that match the much-needed medical equipment asked for by the Hospital.  This Committee is the heart of what the Health Sciences Foundation does and it has been incredible to take my experience full circle from raising funds to seeing the equipment purchased and put to use by talented medical professionals.  You see, our donors who so generously support us, ensure the community of Thunder Bay has the lifesaving medical equipment we do. That’s why I am just so passionate about working with this organization to continue to fund and provide this equipment that is so needed in our hospitals and makes a difference in the lives of so many.

After our first meeting of the year on October 4, it was clear that the Health Sciences Foundation Board members are extremely excited to be the voice of donors to ensure their passions and dreams come to life through gifts made in support of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. I sincerely look forward to serving the community of Thunder Bay over the next two years as Chair of the Health Sciences Foundation.
