High School Students Eligible to Earn University Credits Tuition-Free

SAULT STE MARIE – EDUCATION – Algoma University, in partnership with the Algoma District School Board (ADSB) and Huron Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB), are pleased to announce the launch of the Early Access Program (EAP). EAP provides high school students with the opportunity to earn university credits tuition-free while completing their secondary school diploma.

“We are thrilled to be launching the Early Access Program with the Algoma District School Board and Huron Superior Catholic District School Board,” said Algoma University President Dr. Richard Myers. “This program is a great opportunity for university-bound secondary school students to get a taste of university education while earning credits toward their future post-secondary education here at Algoma U.”

The Early Access Program provides high school students with the opportunity to experience university-level learning prior to completing their secondary school diploma. Students that participate in EAP will be expected to attend class regularly, participate in group work, and write exams. The program will expose students to Algoma University’s supportive student environment, as well as provide them with an opportunity to assess their interest in a given subject prior to applying to the university.

“We are happy to be collaborating with Algoma University on this Early Access Program. Strengthening partnerships within the academic community is essential to the success of our students as they attempt to determine their post-secondary path. We have had a strong relationship with Algoma University over the years and this is another progression in the partnership,” said HSCDSB Director of Education, John Stadnyk.

EAP also affords for more planning time for families before students enrol in a post-secondary institution. “The Algoma District School Board is pleased to be in partnership with Algoma University as we plan for the launch of the Early Access Program in the fall of 2015… We recognize, that for our students and their parents, making the decision to pursue a university education requires a lot of thought and careful planning. The Early Access Program will provide our high school students with the opportunity to complete a university course in a supported environment before making a long-term commitment and investment,” added Asima Vezina, Superintendent of Education, Operations and Planning, with the ADSB.

Students who participate in the program are exempt from paying tuition. University credit is only granted if the student enrols at Algoma U in the future. Students can earn a maximum of six credits (two university courses valued at three credits each).

Algoma University will begin accepting applications for the program on May 1st. Students have until August 15th to apply. Those who meet the admission criteria will have the option of choosing from over 40 first-year courses in a variety of subjects ranging from Business to Fine Arts.

Grade 11 student Erin Riley of St. Mary’s College is eager to start in the Early Access Program this fall. “I’m really excited for this program and the different class options it will create for me. Being able to experience the atmosphere and expectations students will have to face in post-secondary is a great opportunity for students like me who are interested in higher education.”

To be eligible for EAP, students must be enrolled as full-time students within the ADSB or HSCDSB. Students must be a minimum of 16 years of age or older at the time of enrolment and be maintaining an 80 percent average in Grade 11 or Grade 12. Students are also required to submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor or principal.
