Potato Chips running in ‘Chiplection’

THUNDER BAY – Lay’s is running a ‘Chiplection’ and asking Canadians to vote for what their new flavour favourite will be.

The contest has generated some interesting flavours for potato chips. There are Creamy Garlic Caesar, Grilled Cheese and Ketchup, Maple Moose, and Perogy Platter.  The winning flavours were selected in a contest, and now the voting is all up to consumers.

Potato chips are a popular snack. In Canada, we consume 200,000 metric tonnes of potatoes sliced thin and bagged into Lay’s potato chips. Add in how many more tonnes of potatoes end up in store brands, Old Dutch chips, and other potato chip snacks, and the entire production of potatoes might seem like it is chipped away.

Traditional Potato Chip Flavours Vary Across Canada

The different flavours of potato chips that are popular across Canada vary greatly too.

In Ontario, thirty percent of the Lay’s potato chips consumed are Salt and Vinegar. Plain chips are the most popular in Ontario.

That is a contrast to Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan where Sour Cream and Onion is the most popular flavour, after plain.

For people in Quebec, it is Barbeque, again after plain. What likely makes plain chips so popular is that ripple chips and dip are another popular choice.

The current Lay’s Contest is asking you to vote for your favourite new flavour. The people who have come up with the flavours have all won $5000 so far. But the bigger prize of $50,000 and one percent of future sales is now at stake.

Some of the contestants are taking to social media, with Youtube videos to get the word out.

The voting is all in good fun.

The big question is what is your favourite flavour of potato chips?
