CALGARY – SPORTS – In NHL Hockey on Sunday night the Toronto Maple Leafs topped the Calgary Flames.
Auston Matthews scored the game winning goal at 2:42 of the third period as the Toronto Maple Leafs kept the dream of their legion of fans alive in a 3-2 victory against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome.
Morgan Rielly had three assists, and Jack Campbell made 31 saves for the Maple Leafs (5-2-0), who have won four of their past five games.
Auson Matthews stated postgame, “I think it was a pretty ugly game, to be honest, for us”. “There were a lot of things we could’ve done better. I think we had good sequences in the game and obviously a couple solid lucky bounces that went our way today. We’ll definitely take them. There will be some stuff we can clean up.”
Sean Monahan and Matthew Tkachuk scored, and Jacob Markstrom made 29 saves for the Flames (2-1-1), who play the Maple Leafs again here Tuesday.
“It’s kind of like a mini playoff series,” Markstrom said. “You want to, for sure, start by winning the first one and keep building off that, but now we’ve got a big game in a couple days against a good team. We’ve got to play tight; we’re creating chances … we’re not worried.”
Jets Vs Oilers
WINNIPEG – SPORTS – Winnipeg Jets lost a heartbreaker when Edmonton Oiler Leon Draisaitl scored with less than one second remaining to give the Oilers a 4-3 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Place Sunday.
Draisaitl snapped a shot from just outside the left hash marks off a pass from below the goal line by Connor McDavid.
“We got a nice fortunate one at the end,” said Draisaitl.
“McDavid obviously had it, had full control. He passed out front,” said Winnipeg goaltender Laurent Brossoit. “I didn’t think [Draisaitl] could go five-hole considering [Andrew Copp] was on the ground. I was just trying to track any puck up high, and it went, obviously, under me.”
Kailer Yamamoto tied the game 3-3 for Edmonton with 3:05 left after the Jets had taken the lead with two third-period goals.
