THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Moore Avenue just after 3 am EDT on Sunday, August 30, 2020, following reports of a male armed with a sword charging at people.

While en route police learned the male, who had also stated they were armed with a firearm, had fled the area in a black pick-up truck. Officers spotted a truck matching the suspect’s vehicle description being driven erratically in the area of Belrose Road and John Street Road.

Police initiated a traffic stop, which the suspect eventually complied with. Police then ordered the driver to exit the vehicle, at which point the arrest was completed without further incident.

A sword was seized from the suspect’s vehicle.

During the arrest, police noticed signs the driver was impaired.

The accused was transported to the TBPS headquarters at 1200 Balmoral Street where a breath test confirmed the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was three times the legal limit.

Jason Andrew PROKOPCHUK, 38, of Thunder Bay, is charged with:

• Driving While Impaired
• Driving While Impaired Blood Alcohol Concentration
• Flight from Peace Officer
• Assault With Weapon
• Uttering Threats

PROKOPCHUK appeared in bail court Sunday morning and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
