Balmertown Man Faces Animal Cruelty Charges

RED LAKE – Charges of animal cruelty and killing animals were laid against Joey Wilkins, a twenty-three year old Balmertown man.

On February 5, 2020 officers from the Red Lake detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were contacted by a home owner in Balmertown reporting a break and enter on his property.

The OPP investigation determined that someone had killed several chickens and rabbits.

The OPP investigation led to Joey Wilkins, 23, of Balmertown. Wilkins was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • Killing Animals contrary to Section 445(1)(a)
  • Cruelty to Animals contrary to Section 445.1(1) (a)
  • Break and Enter contrary to Section 348(1)(b)
  • Mischief to property contrary to Section 430(1) (a)

Wilkins was remanded into custody and later released on an Undertaking to appear in Kenora court on March 18, 2020, to answer to the charges.
