THUNDER BAY – Ontario is hiring 14 new correctional officer graduates in the North to help make the adult correctional system safer.
“Correctional officers are essential partners in Ontario’s justice system,” said Sylvia Jones, Solicitor General. “They perform a great service that contributes to community safety across the province. I would like to congratulate every officer graduating this week for their hard work and dedication.”
Graduates have successfully completed correctional officer training, consisting of a comprehensive eight-week program that includes mental health training, Indigenous cultural training, inmate management techniques, and ongoing training and job coaching following deployment.
Many of the correctional officers from today’s graduating class come from communities in the North, were all trained in the North and will be assigned to the Thunder Bay Jail and the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre. This program offers a local perspective on the unique challenges of each facility and ensures frontline officers reflect the communities they serve.
“We will continue to work directly with all of our frontline staff to ensure they have the resources needed to keep themselves safe, while supporting the rehabilitation of those in our correctional system,” said Jones. “These officers help vulnerable offenders navigate and overcome significant barriers and challenges such as mental health and addiction issues. Their dedication makes our communities safer.”
