Thunder Bay Business Fined over Violations of Fire Code

THUNDER BAY – NEWS – A failure too keep to the fire code has resulted in charges for a Thunder Bay Business. “A business operator is responsible for carrying out the provisions of the Fire Code in order to keep the public safe. Monthly and annual checks must be completed and records must be kept,” said Fire Chief John Hay. “Failing to test and inspect a fire and life safety system can result with a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations.”

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reports, “A Thunder Bay grocery store has pleaded guilty to four counts of violating the fire code in Provincial Offences Court. Charges were laid for not testing various fire and life safety systems in the grocery store. The Ontario Corporation was fined $2000 per count for a total of $8000, plus victim fine surcharge and costs. The charges stem from a June 2018 inspection.”
