THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – Environment Canada is calling for freezing rain tonight over a large area of Northwestern Ontario.

3:47 PM EDT Wednesday 10 October 2018
Freezing rain warning in effect for:

  • Atikokan – Shebandowan – Quetico Park
  • Upsala – Raith
  • Marathon – Schreiber
  • Nipigon – Rossport
  • Cloud Bay – Dorion
  • Kakabeka Falls – Whitefish Lake – Arrow Lake

A messy mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain are expected tonight over a large section of Northern Ontario as a strong low-pressure system approaches the area. The precipitation may initially start off as rain before temperatures fall below zero.

In addition to the freezing rain threat, some areas may receive 5 to 15 cm of snow and ice pellets.

Areas close to the Lake Superior shoreline and northeast of the lake should remain just above zero resulting in mainly rain.

Very poor winter travelling conditions are expected. Motorists should be prepared to adjust travel plans accordingly.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.
