SIOUX LOOKOUT — Doug Lawrance, the Mayor of Sioux Lookout, was nominated this evening as the Ontario Liberal Party candidate for the new riding of Kiiwetinoong.

“The representative we elect for Kiiwetinoong needs to have the experience and knowledge of the entire riding, and have a good understanding of how all levels of government—federal, provincial, First Nations and municipalities—work together. I bring that experience,” said Mayor Lawrance. “I am honoured to be running on Premier Kathleen Wynne’s team, to fight for the care and services Northern Ontario needs through policies that will enhance access to health- and long-term care, provide free prescription medication, extend the clean electricity grid to northern First Nations, develop of the Ring of Fire and provide a $15-an-hour minimum wage.”

Mayor Doug Lawrance was born in Scotland and came to Canada with his family in the late 1950s. In 1964, his family moved to Thunder Bay where Lawrance completed high school and then attended Lakehead University earning a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and sociology and an engineering degree. He moved to Sioux Lookout in 1985 to work with Keewatin-Aski Ltd. Lawrance then managed a successful engineering business while undertaking planning, design, and construction phases projects throughout Northwestern Ontario. His client base included regional municipalities, First Nations, government agencies, and private clients.

Following retirement from Keewatin-Aski Ltd in 2010, Lawrance worked as an independent project manager primarily at the Meno-ya-win Health Centre managing the completion stage of the hospital project while undertaking other assignments for the health centre, including the preliminary planning phase of a 96-bed long-term care facility for Sioux Lookout. Lawrance was very involved in both in coaching and the hockey executive. As well as volunteering in various sports and recreational activities, he has sat on various municipal committees and is currently a Director of the Meno-ya-win Health Centre Foundation, a fund-raising arm of the Meno-ya-win Health Centre. He is Mayor of Sioux Lookout. He and his wife have a daughter and two sons.

Lawrance is the twelfth municipal elected official nominated to run for the Ontario Liberals in the 2018 provincial election.
