Thunder Bay – On Sunday evening, Thunder Bay-Superior North NDP members nominated local small business owner Lise Vaugeois to represent their riding as the candidate in the next provincial election, set for June 2018.

“As a small business owner I’m concerned about skyrocketing hydro bills,” said Vaugeois. “I have seen the damage the Wynne Liberals have done to our hydro system firsthand and I’m worried that the Conservatives will be no better – they’ve said they’ll leave Wynne’s $40 billion hydro borrowing scheme in place if they’re elected. It’s not enough to just vote against the Wynne Liberals – we need to think about what kind of premier and government we want next.”

“I’ve been in our community talking to people about the NDP’s plan to bring Hydro One back into public hands, giving us more control over hydro bills and saving everyone at least 30 percent on their hydro bills,” added Lauzon. “I’ve also talked with families about Andrea Horwath’s plan to establish Canada’s first universal pharmacare program. It’s a drug plan that covers everyone, regardless of age or income that I really believe in because no one should have to empty their wallet to get the medicine they need.

“The NDP’s commitments on affordability for northern families and better services instead of the cuts we’re all seeing today are things that drive me to put my name on the ballot.”

A long-time Thunder Bay resident – Vaugeois lives with her partner Marueen and operates her business while also lecturing at Lakehead University. Vaugeois has a Ph.D. in music education and is an active member of Thunder Bay’s arts scene, having performed with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. She has also volunteered at the Northern Women’s Centre.

“I know that the only party that will really make a difference in the lives of people in Thunder Bay is the NDP. I’m running because I want to make sure that our next government in Ontario is an NDP government with Andrea Horwath as Premier. Andrea gets the North and I know she will make sure that northern families are top priority for the government.”
