THUNDER BAY – NEWS – UPDATED – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue was on scene for a fire at Sears at Intercity Mall on Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 2:15PM EST Thunder Bay Fire Rescue was dispatched to the call.

There was a report of a fire. On arrival it was discovered that there were two separate fires on two different levels of the department store.

Both fires had been extinguished prior to the arrival of fire personnel.

The building had a fair amount of smoke which had spread. Fire damage was limited to a few cloth items. Thunder Bay Police were investigating the fires which appeared to be a case of vandalism.

There were no injuries to report as a result of this fire. Three pumper units and a ladder truck attended with a total  of 14 fire fighters on scene.

Following initial investigation by Fire Rescue and the Thunder Bay Police the fire is now under investigation as an arson.

Police report, “At aproximately 2:00 pm, a young male entered Sears – 880 Fort William Rd and set fire to throw pillows on the second floor and shirts hanging on the racks on the main floor.”

The male was only in the store for less then three minutes while he committed these arsons then left through the mall doors.

If it wasn’t for fast acting customers who extinguished the fires, the damage would have been extensive.
