Update on Expressway Fatal Accident

THUNDER BAY – On Friday, February 10, 2017 at approximately 6:34 pm, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), as well as Thunder Bay Police Service, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and Superior North Emergency Medical Service (EMS) responded to a report of a vehicle / pedestrian collision at the intersection of Highway 11/17 and Red River Road.

A tractor trailer (log truck) was proceeding north bound on Highway 11/17 crossing the intersection at Red River Road, when the driver struck a pedestrian that proceeded into the intersection against a red traffic light.   

The direction of travel was not east bound from Highway 102 onto Highway 11/17 as previously reported.

Travis TAIT, 32 years of age, from North Caribou Lake First Nation was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The OPP Highway Safety Division (HSD) OPP Forensic Identification Unit (FIU) and the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

The intersection was closed for approximately five hours as police conducted their investigation.
