MARATHON – Community Update – Welcome to the December issued by the Town of Marathon.  This is a means for us to provide information of interest to our residents, in addition to what can be found on our website, www.marathon.ca, through our radio spots, newspaper advertisements and on Facebook through our Town of Marathon page or in the Recreation in Marathon group.  If there are any other subjects that you believe would be of interest, please advise the Parks & Recreation office by e-mail at recoffice@marathon.ca and we will include them in future alerts. CP Holiday Train:  The Canadian CP Holiday Train embarked on its three-week journey which started on November 27 and will be making its stop in Marathon on Thursday, December 1 at 12:20 p.m. Please join us at the Curling Club parking lot to enjoy performances from Dallas Smith & Odds. The Marathon Food Bank will be on-site collecting non-perishable food items. Come out and join us as this is guaranteed to put you into the Christmas spirit!


Christmas Break Schedule:
The Parks and Recreation schedule for Christmas Break will be available at the Complex and online at www.marathon.ca.

Town Staff Annual Christmas Staff Meeting:   The Town Hall and Recreation Complex will be closed from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 1 for the Annual Town Staff Christmas Staff Meeting.  Port Hole Pool users please note that for this day only, the 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. aqua fit, the 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. family swim and the 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. length swim will be cancelled to allow staff to attend this meeting.  The Parks and Recreation Office regular hours will resume in the evening.

Parks and Recreation Office & Port Hole Pool Closure:  Please note that the Parks and Recreation Office AND Port Hole Pool will be closed the evening of Friday, December 9.  The 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. public swim as well as the length swim from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. will also be cancelled.  Regular hours for both departments will resume Saturday, December 10.

Christmas Office Closures:   The Town Office will be closed from 11:45 p.m. on Friday, December 23 and will reopen on Wednesday, December 28 and will close again at 11:45 p.m. on Friday, December 30 and will reopen at 10:00 a.m. for regular office hours on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.  The Recreation Complex will be closed December 24, 25, 26, 31 and January 1.  Bag tags will be made available at a number of locations throughout the Town during these closures.

Council Meeting Schedule:  The December Council meeting will be held Monday, December 19 with Municipal Matters starting at 6:30 p.m. and the Regular Meeting starting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Town Hall.  Agendas and minutes are available on the Town’s website at http://www.marathon.ca/article/minutes-and-meetings-137.asp or at the Town Hall during regular office hours.  Please note that for any other meetings, notices will be posted at the Town Hall a minimum of 24 hours before the meeting.  For further information, please contact the Deputy Clerk at 229-1340 x2223.

Solid Waste & Recycling Christmas Schedule:  The Waste Transfer Station will be closed at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 24 and Saturday, December 31.  Residential garbage pick-up remains unchanged.

Employment Opportunities:  The Town is inviting applications from qualified candidates for the following positions:

– Port Hole Pool Part-Time Staff – Assistant Lifeguards, Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, Aquatic Fitness Instructors
– Rink Attendants and Special Events Workers

Winter Parking Restrictions:  Effective November 1 to April 1, there is no parking allowed on municipal streets from 2:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Some exemptions may apply.  For more information, refer to Winter Road Maintenance By-Law No. 1592 at http://www.marathon.ca/article/bylaws-223.aspPlease do not dump or push snow on municipal property, including sidewalks.

Arena: 
Public Skating is offered every Friday and Sunday from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.  FREE public skating is every Monday from 3:00 – 3:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.   The Recreation Complex will be closed December 24, 25, 26, 31 and January 1.  Schedule is subject to change for hockey tournaments.

Family Swim:   NEW at Port Hole Pool – MORNING family swim every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Aqua Fitness/Aqua Jog and Aquafitness:  Classes are held Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. AND Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.  The Recreation Complex will be closed December 24, 25, 26, 31 and January 1.  Admission is free with an Active Living Membership.  Fitness Cards can be purchased for $60 (10 classes) or drop-in is $7.50.   Contact the Parks and Recreation office for details on classes.

E-Billing: The Town is now offering E-Billing for property owners interested in receiving their water bill via email.  Please send your request (including your name, property address, water account number and email address) to info@marathon.ca.  For more information contact the Finance Department at 229-1340 x2233.

Town of Marathon Apparel Available – The Town of Marathon is now making various items of clothing with the Town’s logo available to the general public. Some of the items available are golf shirts, jackets, hoodies and baseball caps. The clothing items are currently available at Crossover Video.

Hunting Restrictions:  No hunting or discharging of firearms is allowed within Town limits which includes the Shack Lake and Airport areas.  If you require more information, please contact the By-Law Department at the Town Office during regular office hours at 229-1340 x2250 or email bylaw@marathon.ca.

2017 Dog License Early Bird Special: Effective now through to December 31, the cost for a dog tag for an unaltered dog is $15 (regular price $20), altered dogs is $10 (regular price $15).  There is no charge for seniors over 64 years of age but dogs must still be registered.  Tags can be purchased at the Town Office during regular business hours (10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.), Monday through Friday.
