THUNDER BAY – HEALTH – Northwestern Ontario’s Screen for Life Coach continues to be out of service. Due to a collision earlier this spring, a partial re-build is necessary. It is anticipated that the coach will return to service in Northwestern Ontario late this summer.

As a result, the summer screening travel season of the region will be reduced. It is not known yet whether the entire travel season will be impacted. “We are disappointed, of course,” said Lauren Beach, Mobile Coach Lead. “The good news is that there are screening options available, and we have already discussed them with about 2,000 women.”

Women in Northwestern Ontario can access screening at the following Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) sites.

In Thunder Bay:

  • Linda Buchan Centre at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
  • Thunder Bay Diagnostics at the Thunder Bay Medical Centre

In the Region:

  • Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora
  • La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Francis
  • Meno Ya Win Health Centre in Sioux Lookout. While Meno Yah Win is not an affiliated OBSP site at this time, they do offer quality mammography services. If a client wishes to be screened in Sioux Lookout they can call 807-737-3030.

“Screening saves lives. I’m very pleased that women throughout our region have made it part of their routine and are taking advantage of available screening. We encourage women who are50 to 74 years of age to contact us to discuss their screening options,” said Beach. Those women who choose to complete their screening this year at a regional OBSP site, but who want to continue to screen in the future on the coach, should ask to be screened on the coach when contacted again in 1 or 2 years.

Anyone with questions about where to be screened is encouraged to call our main office and we will help to book a convenient appointment. Call 1-807-684-7777 or 1-800-461-7031.

The Screen for Life Coach is a mobile screening service that normally travels to more than 75 different locations throughout Northwestern Ontario from April to October and provides services in Thunder Bay during the winter. It offers three different types of cancer screening to women: breast, cervical, and colorectal.

A travel schedule will be developed once the return date of the coach is confirmed.

The coach was under the care and operation of the manufacturing company at the time of the accident.
